The gaucho Martín Fierro, work of the Argentine José Hernández, is a narrative poem belonging to the gaucho literature. It tells the difficulties and hardships that the Argentine gaucho Martín Fierro goes through. After separating from his wife and children to fight on the border against the Indians, he becomes an outlaw gaucho.
Hernández’s poem reached eleven editions in just six years. This forced the author to write the continuation of the story, La vuelta de Martín Fierro (1879) also published in Linkgua.
Since its publication in 1872, the character Martín Fierro was transformed into a myth. He came to embody the individualism of the gaucho in the freedom of the pampas, in the face of the growing urbanization of the country. He is the figure of the rebel and quarrelsome who denounces the abuses of an endemic environment, linked to Argentina.
The gaucho was a marginal being, considered a savage by the wealthy classes. However, he was also seen with great respect for being free, tough, for his extraordinary skill as a rider, for his generosity and his ingenuity.
From this admiration arose gaucho poetry and the construction of the romantic figure of the gaucho. Whose archetype is an independent and rough man, but loyal and wise, making him a hero.
The text is written with a peculiar style that imitates the speech of the gauchos of the time. This background realism contrasts, however, with the exalted versification and rhyme that the author imposes on his book.

“By assimilation, if not by the cradle, I am the son of a gaucho, brother of a gaucho, and I have been a gaucho. I have lived for years in camps, in deserts and forests, watching them suffer, fight and die; selfless, suffering, humble, selfless and heroic.”

José Hernández, 1881
