La hija del mar is the first romantic novel by Rosalía de Castro, published in 1859. In it we can observe topics such as

  • the vindication of the feminine condition,
  • the presence of a female narrator,
  • the defence of the unprotected,
  • The love for Galician nature —which will appear in all his subsequent production—
  • and the autobiographical data always present in his work.

It is a vindictive story in which two women defend their “honor” in the midst of male harassment.
The prologue of The Daughter of the Sea is a plea for female empowerment:

“Because women are still not allowed to write what they feel and what they know.”

The novel is about the lives of two women, Teresa and her adopted daughter, Esperanza, who go from humble but happy and peaceful lives to a luxury that costs them freedom and even their mother-daughter relationship.
This is a typically romantic work. Teresa is abandoned in childhood by her mother and in youth by her husband, only accompanied by the sea. To this suffering is added the death of his only son, fruit of that love.
However, life will comfort her with the upbringing of an adopted daughter, Esperanza, and the surprise appearance of a husband. This will no longer be the one he was but a rich and authoritarian man who wants to dominate the spirit of his already indomitable wife and will want to seduce the young Esperanza. Both women will finally prevail.
With La hija del mar Rosalía wants to give voice to women without a voice. The author talks about the disinherited of history. Perhaps for this reason the point of view of the novel is a female narrator who must defend her honor in the midst of a sexist, tremendously oppressive environment.
