The Court of Charles IV is the second novel in the first series of the National Episodes by Benito Pérez Galdós.
The protagonist, the young Gabriel Araceli, arrived in Madrid at the end of 1805, after participating in the Battle of Trafalgar. At that time he was an assistant to Pepita González, a theatrical comic actress. In the capital, Gabriel falls in love with the young Inés, a fourteen-year-old seamstress who lives with her widowed mother.
Gabriel dreams of making his fortune and marrying Ines. Thanks to his work for Pepita González, Gabriel manages to put himself at the service of Countess Amaranta. Thus he comes into contact with the world of the Madrid court, where intrigues and conspiracies are the order of the day.
In this way he will witness the frustrated conspiracy of Prince Ferdinand against his father, King Charles IV. At the end of the episode, Gabriel reneges on the courtly life offered to him. He prefers an honest life of poverty next to his beloved Agnes.
However, the intrigue is left open for future installments when he discovers that the young beloved is the unrecognized daughter of the Countess Amaranta, and therefore belongs to the nobility.
