El Cosmopolita is a magazine of political, journalistic and essayistic approach written by the Ecuadorian writer Juan Montalvo. It was published from January 1866 to January 1869 in nine installments, which Montalvo called books. This work can be considered as one of the first modern essays in the Hispanic world and as a precursor of modernism in Latin America.
The texts gathered in El Cosmopolita not only constitute a sharp critique of the dictatorial government of Gabriel García Moreno, but also address a diversity of topics ranging from reflections on Spain, America, Ecuador, Cuba, Bolivia to analyses on women, clergy, militarism, among others. Montalvo adopts a universalist vision, as the name of the journal suggests, and presents himself as a citizen of the world, in keeping with his quote from an ancient philosopher: “citizens of all nations, citizens of the universe.”
Among the many essays published in El Cosmopolita, the “Carta de un padre joven” stands out, written by Montalvo for his daughter María del Carmen, whom he had not seen in a long time. This work also records the sharp attacks against Gabriel García Moreno, evidencing Montalvo’s active role in the political struggle of his time.
El Cosmopolita is a valuable portrait of Ecuadorian and Latin American life during the second half of the nineteenth century, as well as a window into the ideas and concerns of one of the most influential thinkers of his time. For anyone interested in the history of the region, nineteenth-century politics, or simply the power of the well-written word, this is essential reading. This work not only provides an in-depth understanding of the history of Ecuador and Latin America, but also offers valuable reflections on universal themes such as freedom, justice and power, which remain relevant today.
