The Children of Sanchez (Los hijos de Sánchez) is a book written by American anthropologist Oscar Lewis and published in 1961. This book is the result of ethnographic research conducted by Lewis in the 1950s in the Bella Vista neighborhood of Mexico City. In that place resided a low-income Mexican family known as the Sanchezes.
In Los hijos de Sánchez, Oscar Lewis recounts the lives of Jesús Sánchez, the fifty-year-old father, and his four children: Manuel, thirty-two; Robert, twenty-nine; Consuelo, twenty-seven; and Martha, twenty-five. The author examines in detail the family dynamics, poverty and difficulties faced by this family in its socio-economic environment.
Using an anthropological methodology, Lewis analyzes and understands the culture, family relationships, living conditions, and challenges facing the Sánchez family. Through interviews, observations, and the use of personal journals, the author shows the daily struggles, hopes, and dreams of family members.
The book addresses issues such as poverty, marginality, education, violence and the difficulties in overcoming the precarious economic situation. It also highlights the resilience and solidarity present within the family despite adversity.
The Children of Sanchez are recognized for their focus on the culture of poverty theory and have generated academic debates. The book offers a deep and empathetic insight into the experiences and daily lives of a low-income Mexican family in Mexico City. It aims to understand the complexities and challenges of poverty from an anthropological perspective.
