The Cave of Salamanca (La cueva de Salamanca) is an obligatory reference in Spanish esotericism and appears frequently in anthologies of Baroque literature. Its author, Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, who lived for some time in Salamanca, was inspired by the entremés of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Enrico, its main character, is an allusion to the Novo-Hispanic scholar Enrico Martínez.
In The Cave of Salamanca, Ruiz de Alarcón’s interest in magic and occult sciences is evident.
This work was included in a classic of Spanish demonology, Martín del Río’s 1600 treatise De disquisitionum magicarum. The cave was a center of pilgrimage for travelers visiting Salamanca and appears in Walter Scott’s poem The Ride to Melrose.
It is believed that in ancient times it was a place of worship for sun worshippers. The myth of the cave is associated with the figure of the Marquis Don Enrique de Villena, who, being the Devil’s tenant there, managed to deceive him and escape his influence.
The plot of this work takes place in the famous cave.
