“I was born on a day when God was sick, grave.”

The introductory poem The Black Heralds that gives its name to the book of poems, is the prelude that announces the pain reflected in this book. The recent memory of the loss of his brother and the human incomprehension towards the suffering of others, put Vallejo before existential anguish.
César Vallejo tries to represent his life experience in its most complete form. It expresses the inner nature of emotions, without worrying about external reality. Adapt language to express feelings. Vallejo is interested in desolation, the desperate search for the moment of love and the blows of life, which announce desolation and death.
A deep sadness tarnishes many of his compositions since the beginning of Los heraldos negros. In this and other poems the progressive distancing from Modernism is evident. There is no room for his heartbreaking, uncertain-filled poetic self in the beauty and formal perfection of modernist imagery. Verses like the following are in another aesthetic orbit:

“There are blows in life, so strong… I don’t know!”
