Los Ayacuchos is the ninth novel in the third series of the National Episodes by Benito Pérez Galdós.
In this work, Galdós returns again to the epistolary structure that he has already used in other previous novels. We are in the years 1841-1843, and Fernando Calpena, protagonist of many of the previous novels of this third series, undertakes the desperate search for his friend Santiago Ibero, whom we had already met in the previous novel Montes de Oca, from Madrid to Barcelona.
The Ayacuchos was the nickname given to some of the soldiers who participated in the battle of Ayacucho (Peru, 1824) and who on their return to Spain had an important role in national politics during the reign of Isabel II. Specifically, the ayacucho par excellence was General Baldomero Espartero, Duke of Victoria, a fundamental piece in the victory against the Carlists and later regent, after the brief resignation of Isabel’s mother, Queen María Cristina de Borbón.
The reason for the search for Calpena is the commission that Demetria, finally his fiancée, makes him an indispensable condition to be able to marry.
And all this against the background of the revolt of Barcelona against the free trade policy of the regent Espartero, a revolt that will be drowned with the bombing of the city from Montjuïc, ordered by Captain General Van Halen.
The novel will happily end with the double wedding of Fernando and his friend Santiago with Demetria and his little sister, Gracia, respectively.
