The Alpujarra

Pedro Antonio Alarcón wrote several travel books and among them La Alpujarra (1873), in which he describes the customs, history and traditions of that region of Spain, and emphasizes the conflicts of the Moors of the Alpujarra during the rebellion that caused their expulsion.
This book is not only a journey through the geography of the Alpujarra, it is also an archaeology in the history and Moorish legends of the region.

Everything was ready to leave
It was the morning of March 19, 1872, St. Joseph’s Day—in the Roman Almanac—and the eve of the entrance of spring in the northern hemisphere.
My compadre and I had been in Granada for three days.
My compadre was that excellent friend from Madrid who went to the Alpujarra on his own business – matters that, by the way, I will respect and omit completely.
Moreover, in Granada he had joined our expedition, acceding to my supplications, a certain cousin of mine, more Semitic than Japhetic, whom I love as a brother, a traditional comrade and indispensable in my repeated excursions on horseback through that province.
We all had relationships in the Alpujarra villages, and we had already written to our respective friends, after meticulously making the plan of the trip, notifying them of the point and time when we promised to embrace each one.
The servants had gone out the day before, to wait for us at the Venta de Tablate; that is, six leagues from Granada, at the foot of the western flank of the great Sierra…
