Testament and codicil is the personal testament of Pedro Calderón de la Barca, surprising for its clarity of ideas and for the coldness with which he destines all kinds of personal belongings to others.

Testament of Don Pedro Calderón de la Barca
Madrid, 20 May 1681

In the name of the Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three distinct persons and one almighty God, and of the Immaculate in her first most pure moment Mary, for whom we merit the Only Begotten Son of the eternal Father, Word incarnate in his ever-virgin womb to dwell among us, true God and true man, to be sacrificed for us and for us on the altar of the cross, and sacramented in the altar altar; in whose three principal mysteries of our holy faith, and in all those confessed, believed, and taught by the apostolic Roman Catholic Church, first and foremost I protest that well and firmly and truly I believe as infallible truth, which neither can be deceived nor deceived us, and well and firmly and truly hope as in infinite power, and well and truly I love as at best; and in the name of the Guardian Angel of my guardian, glorious Archangels St. Michael and St. Gabriel, blessed Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul and Lord James, Patron of the Spains, with all the choirs of the Angels, Saints and Saints of the heavenly court.
Know how many this letter of testament see as I Don Pedro Calderón de la Barca, knight of the order of Santiago, chaplain of honor of His Majesty and of the New Kings of the holy Church of Toledo, having entered into fearful consideration that it is not just judgment of God in deserved punishment of my sins, and little avail of his waiting to snatch me with sudden death, without time to make voluntary resignation of my soul and my life in his pious hands, or since this is but immense mercy of his to call me with mortal warnings of unfortunate ailment; fearing no less that even in this case (last gift of his clemency) the gravity of the accident will not disturb me the use of powers and senses, nor any other temporary affection of retarded disposition for that trance amuse me to anything but ask forgiveness of my sins; being in no nearer danger to life than life itself, and in my full and entire judgment, which was served to divide to me the power which brought me up, the wisdom which redeemed me, and the love which called me to its true knowledge, in thanksgiving of so many undeserved benefits, and in order to advance in his honor and glory the certainty of dying the uncertain of the hour, Conforming, as if this were the last of my life, to His divine will, I arrange mine in this way.
