It is an important part, they are the reflection of the doubts and social instability of their time.
One of his first stories tells that he realizes the frustrations of the Caribbean nation before the colonizing emergency of the United States in 1902, when the Republic of Cuba was proclaimed. This is the “The Enchanted Deer” (1905) and, according to some critics, inaugurated “a state of mind” in the narrative of the island.
While “The Enchanted Deer” is a clear allegory of America, “Calofilo” (1879), is a portrait of a man haunted by doubts and
skepticism. “Cuestión de monedas” (1888) is a symbolic story that appeared in Revista Cubana.
