As defined by St. Ignatius of Loyola himself at the beginning of the book, the Spiritual Exercises encompass

“every way of examining consciousness, of meditating, of contemplating, of vocal and mental prayer, and of other spiritual operations.”

So this is a work of meditation and prayer where the founder of the Society of Jesus, starting from his own experience, proposes a spiritual guide. For centuries this is the bedside book of those who are willing to withdraw from the world for four weeks to purify their souls.
The meditations, contemplations, and repetitions performed during the days of retreat help to observe one’s life more clearly. They lead the spirit and orient it towards progressive moral perfection.
The Spiritual Exercises that St. Ignatius of Loyola proposes in this work are to be “practiced” rather than “read.” They are inspired by works such as The Life of Christ by the Carthusian Ludolf of Saxony, which contributed to his conversion, and The Imitation of Christ by Kempis. However, they go further in the fact that they do not require a literary understanding. They demand a corporal and spiritual surrender.
This is, in turn, a book derived from the life of Loyola himself. At a very young age, Loyola fought against the French in northern Castile. His military career ended on May 20, 1521, when a cannonball broke his leg during the defense of the castle of Pamplona from a Franco-Navarre incursion.
Loyola’s recovery was long and painful and with a negative result because his bones had been poorly welded. Then he decided to have surgery again and endured terrible pain. Later during his convalescence also the healing was equally very hard. These facts of his life fed his awareness that the human body is also a tool for practicing spiritual exercises.
