España sin rey is the first novel of the fifth and final series of the National Episodes of Benito Pérez Galdós.
In Spain without a king the events that occurred from the Revolution of 1868 until the end of 1869 are collected.
The work portrays the Spain that follows the dethronement of Isabel II, in which various political and dynastic interests are debated. On the historical events, Galdós builds a complex sentimental journey in which a young unionist politician, Juan de Urríes, maintains love affairs with three women located in three different sociopolitical camps. It begins during the electoral period falling in love with Fernanda Ibero and Castro-Amézaga, daughter of the traditional progressive Santiago Ibero, thus symbolizing the alliance of unionists and progressives that has made possible the Revolution of 1868 and that, in good law, should continue. When the constitutive debate begins, Juan de Urríes, while continuing to entertain Fernanda Ibero, begins love affairs with the stepdaughter of the Marchioness of Subijana, of Carlist descent, a relationship that ends in tragedy due to Fernanda’s jealousy. If the writer tried to symbolize in the first alliance the persistence of the coalition of unionists and progressives, in the failure of these relations it is clear that he considers the revolutionary failure resolved by this channel. So in Spain without king Juan de Urríes ends, at the wish of his brother, marrying someone from his socioeconomic and political environment, the Marchioness of Aldemuz.
In reality, the coalition of liberals, moderates and republicans faced the task of finding a better government to replace that of Elizabeth II. At first the Cortes rejected the concept of a republic for Spain, and Francisco Serrano was appointed regent while a suitable monarch was sought to lead the country. Previously, the Constitution of 1869, of liberal court, promulgated by the courts, had been approved.
