Sofronía is a romantic play by José Zorrilla, which tells the story of the martyrdom inflicted by the Byzantine emperor Maxentius on a Christian woman.

Single act

Interior portico on the first floor of the palace of Emperor Maxentius, leading to the rooms of Publius, Prefect of Rome, and to the gardens. Door on the right, leading to the interior of the palace. Door to the left, leading to the rooms of Publius and Sophronia. In the background there is a stone balustrade, through the center of which one goes out to the Emperor’s gardens, which extend behind it, illuminated by the moon, decorated with statues, fountains, arches, vases, etc., etc. In the distance, and closing the picture, the Aventine Hill, in front of which was built the palace of the Caesars, where the Scene is supposed to take place.

Scene I
When the curtain rises, Sophronia appears leaning over the balustrade and gazing intently at the gardens. Silano appears in the fifth line of verse in the background.

Sophronia: Go back; there is no means anymore, everything is useless.
Stop at once with the empty excuses,
and repels their barbaric cravings
of the noble virtue the rude strength.
Do you want war? There will be, desperate.
I will perhaps fall in such a horrendous struggle;
but I do not dread it, I provoke it;
I will fall dead, but I will never surrender.

Scene II

Sophronia and Silane

Sophronia: You will be back soon.

Silano: Take a quick and easy step
door in that wing of the hidden palace.

Sophronia: What does your master say?

Silano: (Giving him a letter or papyrus).
Read what it says.

Sophronia: (After reading.)
By force or will, shall I be yours?

Silano: He himself wants from your own mouth
your assent to hear or your repudiation,
and it will come to you soon: think about it;
your will with your interest in consultation,
but if you appreciate advice, give in.
