Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda, is the supposed author of the apocryphal Don Quixote (entitled Second volume of the Ingenious Hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha), published in Tarragona in 1614.
There have been multiple conjectures and theories about the true identity of Fernández de Avellaneda. Martín de Riquer suggested that it was Jerónimo de Pasamonte, soldier and writer contemporary of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra who fought in Lepanto, like him, and author of a Life, which was not printed.
Another hypothesis states that it is Cristóbal Suárez de Figueroa. Figueroa moved to Barcelona in a desperate attempt to embark with the entourage of the Count of Lemos when he left for Naples after being appointed viceroy of that territory. However, in the end it was not taken into account. Offended by the intrigues of Cervantes, he included in his book España defendida some very harsh stanzas against him.
Cervantes, in turn, satirized him in the episode of Don Quixote in the printing press of Barcelona, alluding to a certain “translator of Italian”.
