The edition we present of the work of Salvador Rizo Blanco (Viceroyalty of New Granada, 1760-1816) gives us a window into the life and legacy of a prominent botanist and painter who played a fundamental role in the Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada, which classified plants and wildlife of the region.
The life and work of Salvador Rizo Blanco is a chronicle of his remarkable contributions. He began his career as a road draftsman. His meeting with José Celestino Mutis in Bogotá in 1784 changed the course of his life. Mutis described Rizo as a fundamental piece to his ongoing work.
During the Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada, Salvador Rizo Blanco was designated as “first painter”, and was also entrusted with the administration and finances of the expedition. In addition, he directed the expedition’s painting school. Of the illustrations that have been preserved from this expedition, 140 bear the signature of Salvador Rizo, and many more are unsigned.
However, his contribution is not limited to the artistic world. After Mutis’ death in 1808, Salvador Rizo assumed leadership of the expedition. In addition, he decided to join the patriot army and bravely faced Spanish repression. His legacy transcends his own time, as science pays tribute to him by awarding him a genus of plants called “Rizoa”, a lasting recognition of his influence in the world of botany.
Salvador Rizo Blanco’s work not only reveals his skill as an artist and scientist, but also his commitment to exploration and the advancement of knowledge.
This edition immerses us in the life of an individual passionate and committed to the documentation and classification of the flora and fauna of New Granada. Through his illustrations and his participation in the expedition, Rizo bequeaths us an invaluable testimony of the natural wealth of the region and the dedication necessary to understand it.
Salvador Rizo Blanco’s life was a journey of significant discoveries and contributions, and this edition allows us to appreciate and honor his legacy in botanical exploration and in art that captures the essence of nature and science in a time of change and evolution.
