The Children of Sanchez (Los hijos de Sánchez) is a book written by American anthropologist Oscar Lewis, published in 1961. The book is the result of ethnographic research conducted by Lewis in the 1950s in the Bella Vista neighborhood of Mexico City, where a low-income Mexican family called the Sanchez lived.
In The Children of Sanchez, Oscar Lewis narrates the lives of: Jesús Sánchez, the father, fifty years old, and his four children: Manuel, thirty-two years old; Robert, twenty-nine; Consuelo, twenty-seven; and Martha, twenty-five. The author examines in detail the family dynamics, poverty and difficulties faced by the family in its socio-economic environment.
Lewis uses an anthropological methodology to analyze and understand the culture, family relationships, living conditions, and challenges facing the Sánchez family. Through interviews, observations, and the use of personal journals, the author shows the daily struggles, hopes, and dreams of family members.
The book addresses issues such as poverty, marginality, education, violence and difficulties in getting out of the precarious economic situation. It also highlights resilience and solidarity within the family despite adversity.
The Children of Sanchez is known for its focus on the culture theory of poverty and has been the subject of academic debate. The book offers a deep and empathetic insight into the experiences and daily lives of a low-income Mexican family in Mexico City, and seeks to understand the complexities and challenges of poverty from an anthropological perspective.
