Some of the anecdotes that Rubén Darío told about his Parisian and Roman adventures (see Rubén Darío‘s Autobiography) can now be seen in another light, through this biography of Rubén Darío written by José María Vargas Vila.
Published in 1917, barely a year after Darío’s death, this volume contains an intense account of the friendship that brought them together and observations on Darío’s poetic merits. His style, which seems to imitate the versification of poetry and yet does not lose its narrative tension, is also surprising.
Anecdotally, it is worth noting that this close friendship did not begin in a fortunate way. When they were young, they had a disagreement when Vargas Vila attacked Rubén Darío, calling him “Poeta Cortesano” for having accepted the appointment of Colombian President Rafael Núñez. This appointment deeply outraged Vargas Vila, who called the Nicaraguan writer “the tyrant poet”.
From then on, the two became bitter enemies. But, after a few years, the enmity was accidentally cancelled when the false news spread that Vargas Vila had died in a shipwreck off the coast of Sicily – others said that of Greece – and according to the newspaper La Nación of Buenos Aires, in a probable suicide of the Colombian together with a mysterious artist.
The fact was that this false event gave rise to an obituary note by Rubén Darío, which appeared shortly afterwards in the same newspaper La Naciónin which he bade farewell to the “revolutionary writer” and praised his work, in addition to claiming for the Colombian writer a “precise place in the Pantheon of artists”.
In return, Vargas Vila -who had not died-, generously decided to reciprocate the flattery, praising the genius of Rubén Darío. Thus began to form a friendship between them that grew closer when they met years later in Rome. That friendship would last until the end of his days.
