Los Romances de los señores de Nueva España is a collection of lyrical and epic poems written by indigenous poets of Mexico in colonial times. These works were compiled by Fray Bernardino de Sahagún, a Spanish Franciscan missionary and ethnographer, who arrived in New Spain (now Mexico) in the sixteenth century.
The compilation is part of a larger work known as Historia General de las Cosas de Nueva España, also called the “Florentine Codex,” which contains detailed information about the culture, customs, religion, and society of the region’s indigenous peoples.
The Romances de los señores de Nueva España are an invaluable sample of the poetry and thought of the ancient indigenous peoples of Mexico. These romances tell heroic stories, myths and legends of the different ethnic groups that inhabited the region, such as the Aztecs, the Mayans and the Zapotecs, among others.
Through these poems, we can appreciate the cultural and linguistic richness of indigenous peoples and their ability to transmit their history and traditions through poetry. The romances reflect the deep connection they had with nature, their religious beliefs and their relationship with the gods.
Sahagún’s compilation is a valuable source of information to understand the worldview and daily life of indigenous peoples in pre-Columbian times and during the early years of Spanish colonization. His work has been widely studied and appreciated for its historical and cultural value, and has contributed significantly to the preservation and dissemination of the cultural heritage of the ancient inhabitants of New Spain.
