Rafael Barrett Anthology

This Anthology of Rafael Barrett contains texts published in newspapers and magazines in Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina, and later collected in books. Most of them appeared after the author’s death.
Barrett was born in Spain to an English father and a Spanish mother (1876-1910). He was the most lucid expositor of the social drama of Paraguay in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Trained in the enlightened world of an aristocratic Spain, influenced by the principles of a diffuse anarchism, his contact with the Paraguayan people, decimated after the war of the Triple Alliance, changed forever his vision of the world.
Rafael Barrett put his pen, moralizing and combative, at the service of his cause. For this he fought and suffered imprisonment and exile.
He died at the age of thirty-four, in France. Far from his family and Paraguay, he did not gain recognition in his native country. In his lifetime he published only one book, Current Moralities. In 1919 Rufino Blanco Fombona published part of his work Editorial América.
