The poetry of Luisa Pérez de Zambrana (1835-1922) belongs to the romantic tradition of Cuban literature. His poems are distinguished by the clarity of language within the second era of romanticism on the island.
Her facet as a poet became known at the age of fourteen with her first verses, which intellectuals and poets around her helped her to gather in a notebook, published under the title of La vuelta al bosque.
This debut film toured the island, Luisa was read in all literary circles and acclaimed as a great poet, a verdict that time has confirmed, because today she is included among the best not only in Cuba, but in Latin America.
The book went around the island, and already in Havana, the intellectual Don Ramón Zambrana was captivated by her work, going to Santiago de Cuba to meet and marry her, and then move together to Havana.
For her great poetic gifts and her grace and finesse, Luisa was chosen to crown the great Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda at the Teatro Tacón, in 1860.
Luisa Pérez de Zambrana did not have an academic background or a solid culture, but “she was born with the gift of poetry.” He suffered in life the greatest human misfortunes:
- the loss of his father at a very young age,
- of her husband (while she was thirty years old),
- of his dearest sisters,
- of his five children between 1869 and 1898;
- Absolute poverty
- and the oblivion of literary circles.
For this reason his work was characterized by its sensitivity, melancholic and tender, with religious and philosophical reflections on death.
