Poems by Juan Boscán Almogaver

The most important contribution of Juan Boscán to Castilian poetry was the introduction of certain resources of Italian meter to it; for which he received unconditional support from the poet Garcilaso de la Vega, with whom he had a strong friendship.
He composed a treatise on Renaissance poetics, which also appeared some sonnets and songs of his authorship that proved the need for this new lyric. It is also worth mentioning that he was one of the first to cultivate other lyrical styles such as the epistle, elegy and royal octave in long poems.

To the Duchess

To whom shall I give my loving verses,
who seek love, with virtue together,
and also want to show ‘beautiful?
To you, lady in whom all this fits,
to thee are given, for if they lack 5
From these things that I say they mean,
in you they will find them fulfilledly.
Pick them up with soft meekness
if you see that they are soft, and if not,
Collect them as they deserve. 10
