Milanés writes his first poems around 1834, but his consolidated lyrical work is composed from 1835 to 1843, and this coincides with the two stages of poetic romanticism in nineteenth-century Cuba; His production is divided into three fundamental moments: the purely lyrical poems, which are those that place him in a high place in Cuban romantic literature; those of popular court, both humorous and satirical, and those that constitute a socio-moral preaching.
Milanese’s poetics are characterized by the romantic air, an intimate, delicate, and simple line; a peculiar way of capturing nature; verses of great popular roots and his curious satirical-costumbrist works.
The Poems of José Jacinto Milanés show his melancholic spirit and reflect the ups and downs of his continuous depressions.
Milanés was more than a cursed poet of Cuba, a poet cursed by his own anxieties and his extreme romanticism visible in his poems.

Requiescat In Pace

I saw her resplendent
In the ranks of the sarao,
And I judged her the living dream
Of the poet in love.
The melancholy glow
From a lonely star,
And the mystical Sun of Aura
Around a bell tower,
They were the light of his eyes
And the accent on his lips.

Like pure angels
She was dressed in white:
Her fresh, red cheek
Like the pomegranate blossom.
Her friends laughed at her:
His mother in luengos hugs
He devoured pure kisses
That his vivid portrait.

II Poor maiden! Two Suns
After the bizarre dance,
I wandered silently
Around the cemetery
When the iron moan
New tomb undermining,
He let me in. The Dark Man
Who takes care to bury us,
Already coldly lying down
On our mud bed
A beauty. I nailed it
My sight… O just and holy God!

I saw the pink cheek!
I met the white dress!
