José Gautier Benítez (1848-1880) is considered the highest exponent of post-romanticism in his country. Known as “El Bécquer puertorriqueño”, his poems reflect the influence of the Spanish poet, in the technique of meter and versification, and content. Gautier once used the pseudonym “Gustavo”.
His verses were published posthumously under the title Poesías (1880). He wrote poems to friendship, country, love and death. In the present anthology we include his best known poems: “Ausencia”, “Regreso”, and “La barca”.
The poetic work of Gautier Benítez is reduced to 71 poems.
In a first stage of eminently amorous theme, Gautier echoes the European romantic influence. However, in his last poems the homeland replaces the beloved as an object of devotion. It is these poems that consecrate Gautier Benítez as the troubadour par excellence of the Puerto Rican homeland.
It is in them that the genius of the poet is best appreciated to personalize the Becquerian influence. He does it in a completely different context but where underlying, without a doubt, the same nostalgic and intimate feeling that inspired the Becquerian rhymes.
