Among the highlights of the work of José de Diego, the poet of Puerto Rico, are the books:

  • Pomarrosas (1904),
  • Jovillos,
  • Student Couplets (1916)
  • and Cantos de pitirre (published posthumously in 1949).

His poems can be classified within romanticism, at one stage, and within realism, at another. They are a journey that ranges from matters of the heart, love of country and melancholy before memories.
José de Diego suffered imprisonment in Spain, because of his political and anti-religious poems. After being released the following year, he returned to Puerto Rico, where he met Carmen Echevarría, who was the inspiration for “Mis bodas” and “Elegía a Laura”. He graduated in Law in Havana, Cuba, and his stay on the island allowed him to come into contact with the work of José Martí.
We have prepared this selection of Poems by José de Diego taking into account his most celebrated poems and the main thematic lines of his work.

José de Diego y Benítez (1866-1918). Lawyer, poet, journalist, essayist, speaker and politician.
He is considered one of the precursors of modernism in Puerto Rico. His poetic work is rooted in the old romantic current, but also nourished by the new modernist aesthetics and, in particular, by his Parnassianist and symbolist tendencies.
