Poems by Hernando Domínguez Camargo

Hernando Domínguez Camargo (Santafé de Bogotá, 1606-Tunja, 1659). Colombia.
His parents were Hernando Domínguez and Catalina Camargo Gamboa. His father died when he was twelve years old. Domínguez Camargo studied at the Jesuit school; a short time later, in May 1621, he entered the Society of Jesus and, after two years, received the vows.
Dominguez traveled to Quito with other members of his order and his stay in Ecuador seems to have had a deep impression on his life.
On his return to Colombia he settled in the Jesuit college of Cartagena; There he wrote his main poetic work. This selection of Poems by Hernando Domínguez Camargo, includes the work he conceived there.
It is not known why he left the Society of Jesus in 1636, although he did not renounce the priesthood.
In 1636 he was parish priest of Gachetá, then of Tocancipá and Paipa and in 1650 of Turmequé.
Later he was a beneficiary priest of the parish church of Tunja. He died in 1659.
