The Poems of Garcilaso de la Vega changed the literary universe of the Castilian language. Garcilaso de la Vega is one of the greatest exponents of the Golden Age and one of the greatest writers in history.
As a poet, in addition to having the admiration of his contemporaries, he was praised by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and Lope de Vega, among others. He is for them the major god of the Spanish Parnassus.
The poetry of Garcilaso de la Vega, had three stages:

  • the Spanish, in which he writes his octosyllabic poems;
  • the Italian or Petrarchist, in which, influenced by Francesco Petrarch, he writes his sonnets and songs in the form of a Petrarchist songbook dedicated to the lady Isabel Freyre;
  • and the classicist or Neapolitan period, in which, influenced by the Latin classical poets and by his new Neapolitan friendships, he wrote elegies, epistles, eclogues and odes, some of them in Latin.

The Poems of Garcilaso de la Vega (1501-1536) appeared in an edition of his friend Juan Boscán and published in 1543 by his widow. It is not very extensive: three eclogues, forty sonnets, four songs, an ode, an epistle and eight compositions of traditional songbook type in octosyllabic verses.
Garcilaso showed a high taste in the selection of his vocabulary. This is characterized by an elegant sobriety in the expression of his feelings and in the description of nature. It moves away from the artificiality of the courtly lyric of the fifteenth century, and bets on a plain and natural language. Garcilaso is an extraordinary example of expressive clarity.
Great connoisseur of the technical resources of poetry, he takes care of the musicality of the verse that harmonizes with the tenderness of his feelings. These are basically loving. It also delights in the placid beauty in the description of its landscapes.
