Poems by Diego Hurtado de Mendoza

The first edition of the poems of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza (1503-1575) did not appear until 1610. However, the edition that has served as the basis for all studies on the poet and his poetry is from 1877.
Like all Castilian poets of his time, Hurtado de Mendoza composed coplas and other short meters of Spanish tradition; being also one of the most determined maintainers of the poetic reform initiated by Juan Boscán and by Garcilaso, with the introduction of the Italian meter.

Tired days, hard sad nights,
raw moments in my misspent ,
The time I thought I would see you moved
In years of sorrow you turned to me.

In me the order of the fairies was missing;
in you also lacked, for such were,
that you can in the time you lived
count long ages of care.

Long are to suffer as to its owner
and short if I had to complain,
but in me this remedy has no place,

that reason flees me like a dream
and there is no point, madam, so small,
Let it not be a year for you to listen.
