Pirates of America, also translated as The Buccaneers of America, is the exciting chronicle, narrated in the first person, of a face-to-face actor of the adventures of the pirates of the seventeenth century.
The work was published in Amsterdam in 1678, and translated into Spanish Alonso de Buena-Maison, a friend of the author, in 1681.
It is considered
“a true account of the most outstanding pirate activities committed at the time on the coasts of the West Indies by the Buccaneers or Filibusters of Jamaica and the Turtle.”
In 1666 Alexandre Exquemelin, the author of Pirates of America, left for America from the port of Le Havre. He sailed on the ship San Juan, of the French West India Company.
The ship fell into the hands of pirates and Exquemelin was sold into slavery on Tortuga Island. During his captivity he learned from his master the trade of surgeon, and adopted the Law of the Coast, being a pirate. Thus he served under such famous pirates as François l’Olonnais, Morgan or Bertrand d’Oregon. He lived unspeakable victories until the failed landing on the western coast of Puerto Rico, in 1674.
He also participated in sieges of the squares of the mainland:
- He fought in the two assaults on Maracaibo.
- He was in the two shots of Santa Catalina Island
- and in the seizure and devastation of Panama.
