Cuban writer Emilio Bobadilla’s masterpiece as a storyteller is A fuego lento. The first part of the novel takes place in Ganga, inspired by the Colombian city of Barranquilla, where Bobadilla lived for a few months in 1898.
The picture drawn by A fuego lento is grotesque. At that time Barranquilla was a major port in Colombia and was called “The New York of Colombia”, “The New Barcelona” or “The New Alexandria”.
Barranquilla had several movie theaters, and Italian opera and Spanish theater companies performed there. Doctor Eustaquio Baranda, a Dominican exile who has studied medicine in Paris, arrives there. The character attracts local powers. The same people who later despise him because he has won the favors of Alicia, who is desired by one of the local men.
Baranda goes to Paris with Alicia. And there her life is consumed in Alicia’s social appetite -exalted by her ambitions and the provincial influence of Ganga’s old acquaintances-. He dies in spite of the balsamic presence of a fine, cultured, delicate and distinguished French woman, whom Dr. Baranda renounces because he does not have the courage to part with Alicia.
