Noli Me Tangere is José Rizal’s most famous text. In 1887 Rizal published this novel about nineteenth-century Filipino society in the midst of his political activity. It sought to denounce the excesses of the Spanish government and its religious institutions, through a story in which the prevailing social classes, love and philosophical reflection appear.
This novel, of undoubted historical content, is also a work of strong social content.
When Rizal returned to the Philippines after completing his medical studies, he was deported to Dapitan on the island of Mindanao. Noli Me Tangere created so much controversy that Governor General Emilio Terrero y Perinat received Rizal at the Malacañán Palace to inform him that his book was subversive.
He was later imprisoned for “inciting rebellion” through his writings. And in 1896, at the age of thirty-five, he was executed in Manila.
Noli Me Tangere is a costumbrista novel about the Philippines of the time before its independence from Spain. And, also, a romantic and sentimental novel of disappointed or impossible loves.
To all this is added a political reflection on the difficult relations of the colony with its metropolis. There is also an argument against the moral degradation of Philippine society by the imposition of a religiosity within the limits of superstition.
In a letter to his friend Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, a Filipino painter living in Madrid, Rizal explains the reason for the title Noli Me Tangere. It is a biblical expression, specifically from John 20:17, when Jesus, after his resurrection, avoids contact with Mary Magdalene by telling her to “stop touching me”:

“The book contains things that no one among us has talked about up to the present; They are so delicate that they cannot be touched by anyone. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve tried to do what no one else wanted. I wanted to respond to the calumnies that for so many centuries have been heaped upon us and our country.”
