Eusebio Martínez de Velazco lived in the nineteenth century. He cultivated the Spanish historical novel, describing in Noche de venganzas the episodes of the war of the communities of Castile. The prince edition of this novel was made by the printing press of the Literary Gallery, Madrid, 1874.
Martínez wrote several chronicles in newspapers of the time, maintained a vocation for the historical story, for prose related to reality.
Night of Vengeance is a chronicle of the great rebellion of the so-called “comuneros”, in the Crown of Castile between 1520 and 1522, during the reign of Charles I.

Without dispute the city of Burgos is one of the most beautiful towns in our Spain.
Written in its enclosure with stone pages the history of the homeland, the traveler observes priceless relics of Roman civilization in the heights of San Miguel and San Quirce; understand the charms of the Arab constructions in the beautiful arches of San Martín and San Esteban; he pauses ecstatically at the somber vagueness and magical adornments of his wonderful Basilica; recalls the classic severity of Ventura Rodríguez in view of his great creations, and runs, finally, on the selfishness and fickleness that characterizes our century when tending the steps through the lined streets and delicious walks with which the present generation has enriched it.
Whoever contemplated the proud Caput Castellæ, from the summit of the neighboring hill that rises behind him, whose wide hills gird it from North to East, would enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas that could have been imagined.
Through a picturesque plain, and similar to a silver ribbon that extends over the green foliage, walks the historic Arlanzón that descends from the immediate Sierra de Oca, forming very colorful waterfalls and diaphanous currents; on each side of its banks rise magnificent buildings, of slender shapes and smiling colors the modern, of severe pillars or capricious details the old, such as the beautiful blocks of houses that extend from the walls of the Cubes to the memorable Bridge of the Widows, such as the triumphal arch of Santa María or the aerial belfry of the convent of San Pablo. Dominating everything in the likeness of the tall cedars that shake their thick hair above the nearby trees, the filigree towers of the great Basilica, the work of angels, as Philip II called it, can be seen; jewel of inestimable value that should be covered with rich lace, according to the poetic expression of Charles I; imperishable memory of the religiosity and enlightenment of the outraged times of the Middle Ages, sacrilegiously mocked by those who do not know how to understand them.
Beyond the extensive circle in which the noble court of the Judges and Counts of Castile is enclosed, discover the indefinable towers of the Hospital del Rey and the famous abbey of Las Huelgas, crowned with Moorish ornaments and girded with Gothic cresting; the renowned Cartuja de Miradores, tomb of Don Juan II, the poet king, ordered to be built by the incomparable Isabella the Catholic; the famous convent of San Pedro de Cardeña, manor mansion of the victorious Count of Castile Fernán González and glorious tomb of El Cid, and finally, the sumptuous monastery of Frendesval, looted in 1808, devastated and desecrated in 1835, almost reduced to rubble in 1840, and today converted into a brewery of beer and soft drinks, with the decline of the decanted civilization of our days.
Such is Burgos, the superb Caput Castellæ, favorite museum of the artistic beauties that bequeathed us the past centuries, “where the taste and elegance of that misunderstood time -as the wise archaeologist M. Bosarte says-, have shaken their wings covered with aljófar and rhinestones, to leave flooded with treasures the beloved soil of the Fernandos and Isabeles”.
