Meditando is a collection of essays by Eugenio María de Hostos taken from articles published in the press. Meditando appeared for the first time in the Quisqueyana Library and analyzes very varied topics.
It is the posthumous work of Hostos and collects his famous essay on Hamlet.
Eugenio María de Hostos began a long journey in 1871, in favor of the Cuban cause, which took him through the lands of Latin America. He visited Caracas, Bogotá, Santiago de Chile, Valparaíso, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, always observing and understanding the Hispanic American realities.
At this time he wrote a critical judgment of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which was integrated into the play. Meditating (1909), a compendium of essays written between 1872 and 1900, which also included Placido, Carlos Guido Spano, Guillermo Matta, Lo que no guiso el lírico Quisgueyana, José María Samper, Salomé Ureña de Henríquez, among others.
The figure and writings of Hostos are particularly interesting as an expression of the peculiar Antillean socio-historical situation of the second half of the nineteenth century. At that time, an attempt was made, through theory and action, to work for independence, educational reform and the dignification of Caribbean culture.
Hostos’ work and ideas have influenced Latin American intellectual discourse for more than 125 years, making a tremendous contribution to Caribbean identity, culture and political development. Hostos was a moralistic thinker, whose ideas are shown in his writings, which seek in their essence, morality and pedagogical ethics in education.
This author represents the Antillean thought of Latin American integration and the strengthening of education as the only way for the progress of this people that has a promising future.
