In Marianela, by Benito Pérez Galdós, the love between a poor and not very graceful girl and Pablo, a man blind from birth, is told. The plot takes place in Socartes, a mining town, and Aldeacorba, where Pablo lives with Don Francisco Penáguilas, his father.
The Penáguilas family enjoys a growing wealth and Pablo is happy with Nela, his guide; with whom he walks and converses. Nela is a poor orphan who lives with the family of the foreman of the mines, Centeno. She is despised and only feels joy accompanying Paul.
Pablo believes that Marianela is a woman of extraordinary beauty. They feel a deep love and Paul promises to marry her. However, Don Teodoro Golfín, a famous ophthalmologist, has come to Socartes with the purpose of curing Paul.
Why does nature, by showering him with material goods, deny him the only thing that can make him happy? At the end of Marianela , Pablo’s operation and his healing provoke a dramatic outcome.
Starting from a case extracted from a treatise on psychology (the recovery of vision in a congenital blind man), Galdós created one of his most famous novels.
Marianela (1878) belongs to what Galdós called “Novels of the First Epoch” that include works such as Doña Perfecta (also published by Linkgua) and Gloria.
