Set in “an absurd, bright and hungry Madrid”, Luces de bohemia is the first of the plays that Valle-Inclán himself described as grotesque. It was a new theatrical genre. A way of observing the world that would earn him a place of honor in the Spanish language literature of the twentieth century.
It is the protagonist of the play, Max Estrella, a poet who starved and blind, who coins the term in the Twelfth Scene:

“Grotesque has been invented by Goya. […] The classical heroes reflected in the concave mirrors give the Esperpento. The tragic meaning of Spanish life can only be given with a systematically deformed aesthetic. […] Spain is a grotesque deformation of European civilization. […] The most beautiful images in a concave mirror are absurd.”

In Luces de Bohemia Valle-Inclán denounced the reality of his time. Through Max, the Spain of the Restoration is dissected. It was, in Valle-Inclán’s vision, an oppressive, unjust country unaware of its own monstrosity.
This is a celebrated archetype in literature. It exists since Oedipus, the mythical Homer and Democritus. And we see it here in Max’s blindness, which becomes the paradoxical basis of a more lucid look.
Bohemian writers and artists and the difficulties and greatness of their lifestyle are the underlying theme. The plot is the death of Max Estrella, bohemian and anarchist, partly inspired by the modernist poet Alejandro Sawa, a friend of Valle-Inclán.
Max is accompanied and betrayed by Don Latino on his last night.
