International Chronicle recounts the politics of Europe during the second half of the nineteenth century. It is an exhibition of events that occurred from 1890 month by month, considered relevant both in Spain and internationally.
Emilio Castelar takes care of narrating them demonstrating a deep knowledge of the politics of his time, as well as universal history.
In his book he recounts political circumstances in different countries, showing his opinions about it. For example, it shows its admiration for America; also expresses its joy at the establishment of the French Republic; his admiration for Otto von Bismarck, although he did not hesitate to criticize his management of the capture of Alsace and Lorraine.
In the same way, it manifests a clear opposition to socialist ideas, because it is, according to the author, a sectarian movement contrary to progress and freedom.
Finally, it is worth mentioning the author’s explanation about the failure of the 1st Spanish Republic, Castelar blames the revolutionary and radical republicans for revolting against any more moderate political initiative.
Emilio Castelar ends his work with references to the political events that occurred in 1898, and laments the loss of the last Spanish colonies, although he tries to inject with a few words of hope the future of Spain.
