The Indian Ecclesiastical History is a chronicle of the evangelization of Mexico. It was written in the late sixteenth century by Jerónimo de Mendieta and first published by Joaquín García Icazbalceta, in 1870. The Spanish royal house prevented its publication due to Mendieta’s criticism of the colonization of the New World.
Although with a certain paternalism, Mendieta denounces in this book the excessive desire for wealth that is hidden behind the Christian purposes of certain conquerors.
The Indian Ecclesiastical History traces an idyllic panorama. In which the reactions of the aborigines to the arrival of the Spaniards are far from reality. In his chronicle, Mendieta defends a method, considers it necessary to address the phenomenon of evangelization through the power of the divine word. He advises that it be by peaceful and Lascasian means.
It also criticizes

  • the imposition of taxes,
  • the slavery of the Indians,
  • opposes the ecclesiastical hierarchy,
  • approves the mass baptism of the Indians as well as
  • the imposition of other sacraments,
  • and believes in the true and authentic conversion of the indigenous.
