Juan Bautista Alberdi’s book Ideas para preside over the preparation of the course of contemporary philosophy was published in 1842 and had an enormous influence on the field of Ibero-American thought.
In his Ideas to preside over the preparation of the course of contemporary philosophy, Alberdi is the first Argentine thinker who has earned the merit of formulating, in clear terms, the question of the existence of a Latin American philosophy. Alberdi unites the concept of philosophy with the historical reality of Latin America.
«… Our philosophy, then, must go beyond our needs.”
It also connects the idea of a particular, national, American philosophy, a rejection of the universality of philosophy. On the other hand, he also conceives philosophy as a discipline with a marked social and political vocation, aimed at solving the problems that threaten the destinies of Latin America.
In this essay, anticipating twentieth-century thinking, Alberdi states:
“There is, therefore, no universal philosophy, because there is no universal solution of the questions that constitute it in the background. Each country, each epoch, each philosopher has had its peculiar philosophy, which has spread more or less, which has lasted more or less, because each country, each epoch and each school have given different solutions to the problems of the human spirit.”
