Hymns by Gonzalo de Berceo

Gonzalo Berceo translated three hymns from Latin, gathered in this edition. The first two are considered to come from the Carolingian era:

• the Veni Creator Spiritus full of dulçe lumne, dedicated to the Holy Spirit,
• and Ave Sancta Maria star of the sea, attributed to Saint Bernard or Fulbert of Chartres and which revolves around the idea of Mary, as universal mother;
• and the third, Tu Christe que luz eres, que alumnas el día.

Veni Creator Spiritus plena de dulçe lumne,
Visit our lies of your sancta lumne.
Purge our breasts of evil slander,
Implelos de tu graçia commo es tu costumne.

You are entitled to such comforter,
Dono dulz preçioso de Dios nuestro Sennor,
Fuent viva, living fire, caridat e amor,
Unity with which he heals the sinful soul.

De la tu sancta graçia, de la tu caridat
Manan the seven gifts of grant actoridat:
You are said finger of the King of magestat,
Tu façes a los barbaros fablar latinidat.

Ençiende la tu lumne in our sense
May our souls ayan in you complicated love:
The laziness of the body that is muffled
Sea resuçitada por el tu don complido.

From the mortal enemy your graçia defend us,
Give us how we live in peace and without strife:
Your script ours, cover us your store
That escusar we can all ma]a façienda.

Let us know how the Father understands
Turned with the Father to the Fixed connoçer:
From you as we have creençia and know,
As you are with both a God and a power.
