The History of the rebellion and punishment of the Moors of the Kingdom of Granada (1600), contains, among other key documents on this rebellion, the Capitulations of the Moriscos, or the Memorial in defense of the Moorish customs that originated the dispute. Luis del Mármol, its author, fought in North Africa. There he learned about the vicissitudes and conflicts of relations between the Islamic world and Spain.
Del Mármol began to write his manuscript from 1574, but it was not until 1600 that Juan René’s Malaga press was responsible for publishing it.
History of the rebellion and punishment of the Moors tells from the eyewitness testimony of the chronicler, all the events that happened in the kingdom of Granada during the years of the rebellion of the Moors, descendants of the Christianized Moors (1560-1571), in La Alpujarra, whose leaders were Aben Humeya and Diego López, called Abdalá Abén Aboo. The rebellion would not be put down until 1571.
Luis de Mármol Carvajal, being very young, participated in the African campaign of Emperor Charles V in 1535. He suffered captivity in Muslim prisons for about seven years and eight months. He states this in his foreword to the first part of the General Description of Africa.
Then, after regaining his freedom, he came to travel through territories of the Ottoman Empire. Its presence in African lands lasted about fifteen years. So much time allowed him to know the Arabic culture and language very well.
In 1568 the war against the Moors (1568-1571) began. In this war period, and in Granada, Luis del Mármol Carvajal served Juan de Austria in the tasks of expulsion of the Moors. By appointment of the same brother of the Spanish emperor, he held the position of supplier of bastions and ammunition to the army.
Luis del Mármol Carvajal was an exceptional witness because of his status as overseer of the royal army. This History of the rebellion and punishment of the Moors, is the most extensive and thorough chronicle of that war. It is still a source of great value to historians today.
