Although Francisco López de Gómara was never in America, the Historia general de las Indias y conquista de México (1552), had much diffusion in his time. The facts were told by Cortés himself and other expeditionaries, at the time when López de Gómara was Cortés’ secretary, in Tunisia.
It seems that his references were

  • the Decades of the New World, by Pedro Martín de Anglería;
  • the Letters of relationship of Hernán Cortés;
  • the General and Natural History of the Indies, Islands and Tierra Firme del Mar Océano, by Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo;
  • and the History of the Indians of New Spain, by Fray Toribio de Benavente “Motolinía”

among other texts.
The General History of the Indies is an authentic detailed succession of those events, an orderly chronicle well inserted in history, written in elegant style, and full of quotations from the classics; an epic exaltation of Hernán Cortés, in the style of Plutarch. Regarding the Indians, the point of view of Francisco López de Gómara was the official one, opposite to that of Fray Bartolomé de las Casas.
Finally, we want to say that this edition includes a prologue by Jorge Gurría Lacroix.
