Eduardo Morales Morales (1868-1938) was a Cuban artist, specializing in the representation of landscapes and scenes with volantas or quitrines, traditional vehicles in Cuba. This edition is part of our series of illustrated books, selected, among other reasons, because we have used images of these artists for the covers of our books.
We consider the works of Morales Morales as emblematic in the collective imagination of Cuban history. Morales Morales began his training at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture of San Alejandro. His early work already showed a mastery of drawing and a pleasant use of color, characteristics that would become distinctive of his style.
When the 1895 War of Independence broke out in Cuba, Morales Morales left his studies to join his country’s freedom struggle. His patriotism and commitment to the national cause demonstrated his character and profound values.
After the war, he joined the police force, where he continued to serve his country. Despite his professional obligations, he devoted his free time to painting, perfecting his technique and exploring subjects he was passionate about. After retiring, he devoted himself entirely to painting, focusing his work on the city and country scenes of Cuba.
Eduardo Morales Morales participated in several competitions and exhibitions, winning public applause and critical recognition. The meticulousness of his drawing and the authenticity of his depictions resonated with those who saw his work. His works were shown in the first salons of Fine Arts in Havana, where he received notable praise. His painting “Volanta” was even part of the historic exhibition “Three Hundred Years of Art in Cuba.”
