Los ríos profundos, by José María Arguedas, narrates Ernesto’s learning process. He is a fourteen-year-old boy, who faces the injustices of the adult world, in which he must choose his future.
Ernesto is the son of a wandering lawyer, always persecuted by political enemies. He finds protection in an indigenous community until his father picks him up and takes him with him from village to village. Finally he was interned, in Abancay, in a religious school.
From that moment on, Ernesto describes memories of the past —of the various indigenous villages— and the stage of his life at school, whose atmosphere is somber and often disgusting.
The development of the argument goes on evoking first the time before boarding school. Then it describes the awareness of an adult Ernesto who must choose between the Andean world and the landowner class.
The ambivalent personality of the protagonist of Los ríos profundos, his real belonging to the class of whites and his identification with indigenous culture, make the story one of the most heartbreaking in Latin American letters. In the same way, the excellence of the language used by the author, also intertwines these two worlds.
Sometimes his style “translates” into Spanish the peculiar speech of the Indian. This aesthetic recreation demonstrates Arguedas’ mastery as a storyteller, and justifies his place of reference among the most important Latin American writers.
Los ríos profundos is the third novel by Peruvian writer José María Arguedas. Published by Editorial Losada in Buenos Aires (1958), it received in Peru the National Prize for the Promotion of Culture “Ricardo Palma” (1959). He was also a finalist in the United States for the William Faulkner Prize (1963).
