Decrees of Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz

This brief selection of Decrees and documents of Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz shows his ideology. In this edition we include the following documents that seem to us to express his idea of good government and the balance between the freedoms and powers of the State:

• Mr. Rector and Illustrious Cloister. Speech given at the University of Havana as a student.
• Decree of extinction of slavery. The leader of Cuban independence proclaims the freedom of Cuba’s slaves in one of the decrees gathered here. Let us consider it a revolutionary and transcendental text in the history of Cuba. Since it anticipates almost twenty years to the definitive abolition of slave labor on the Island. This Decree was later revoked after the end of the First War of Independence.
• Constitution of Guáimaro of 1869. Agramonte participated with Antonio Zambrana in the drafting and approval of the Constitution. It defines the de facto powers that would govern the first Cuban War of Independence against Spain.
