In Cuban Costumbristas of the nineteenth century are grouped texts of a score of Cuban authors representatives of costumbrismo , literary movement developed in Latin America in the nineteenth century.
Cuban costumbristas wrote under the influence of Mariano José de Larra and Ramón de Mesonero Romanos. His works were among the first national expressions of the island. Although costumbrismo had varied and opposite signs: progressive or conservative, ironic and sarcastic, even kind, its distinctive features are the criticism of customs, the moralizing eagerness, and humorism.
Throughout the nineteenth century appear numerous pictures of customs that are collected in newspapers, magazines, brochures and even anthologies. The themes of the traditional articles that we find in these newspapers demonstrate these fundamental purposes:

  • about education and love,
  • censorship of dances,
  • gambling and extravagant fashions,
  • Satirical attacks on effeminacy
  • and the misguided instruction of children.

And also, the increasingly hot theme of slavery.
This edition is prefaced by Salvador Bueno, essayist, critic, historian, professor and journalist. He is considered one of the greatest disseminators of Cuban literature.
