Cuban Constitution of 1976

The Cuban Constitution of 1976 is the magna carta that establishes the legal and political framework of the Republic of Cuba. It was adopted on 24 February 1976 and has undergone some modifications over the years. This Constitution replaced the 1940 Constitution and established the socialist political and economic system in Cuba.
The 1976 Constitution establishes that Cuba is a socialist workers’ state, independent and sovereign. The Communist Party of Cuba is the highest leading force of society and the State. It also guarantees the fundamental rights of Cuban citizens. Among others, the right to equality, education, health, work, housing and social security.
In addition, the Constitution establishes the division of powers in the Cuban State, with the National Assembly of People’s Power as the supreme organ of State power and the Council of State as its executive organ. It also lays the foundations for territorial organization, the planned economy and citizen participation in decision-making.
The Cuban Constitution of 1976 has been modified several times, being the last reform of 2019. These reforms have addressed issues such as the structure of the state, citizens’ rights and the economy.
