In Los cordobeses en Crete Juan Valera tells the origins of a story that happened in Muslim Spain. Abu Hafs, a merchant from Córdoba, falls in love with a beautiful woman from the harem of the city’s emir. Abu after seducing her was forced in 818 to flee Córdoba along with all those who supported him in the revolts caused by the incident.
Thus thousands of Andalusians fled from Córdoba, and in a long journey, through the Maghreb and Egypt they lived for years eager to find a place to put down roots. Almost ten years later, in 827, Abu and his people had to embark again on a journey in search of a land to settle.
In these circumstances, Abu Hafs negotiated with the emir that they be granted safe conduct to flee Alexandria and settle “in some region of Byzantium, outside Islam.” That new promised land for the Andalusians would be the island of Crete. In it they finally established a dynasty that reigned for centuries forging the legend of the Cordobans in Crete.
