Carlos VI en la Rápita is the seventh novel in the fourth series of the National Episodes by Benito Pérez Galdós.
The work begins in 1860, when the African campaign begun in the previous novel continues, narrated and starred this time by the “prophet” of peace, the infatuated and incorrigible Don Juan Santiuste. With the help of El Nasiry, another member of the Ansúrez family, he will leave Tetouan to reach Tangier, from where he will return to the peninsula.
In this journey he will have time to: face Leoncio Ansúrez, of whom he had been a disciple in the locksmith trade; forget Lucila Ansúrez; abducting Yohar, the daughter of a leading Jew from Tetouan; and try to flee with one of the wives of his protector and friend El Nasiry, formerly Gonzalo Ansúrez.
Once in Madrid, his protector and hero of this series of National Episodes, the Marquis of Beramendi, will send him on a private espionage mission to Tortosa, where there are rumors of a new Carlist uprising taking advantage of the fact that the bulk of the army is still in Morocco, consolidating the peace signed.
There Santiuste will find the Archpriest, a peculiar and fierce Carlist priest, and Donata, one of his protégés, with whom he will flee with the help of Diego Ansúrez, sailor and member of the aforementioned family.
And we will also meet another component, Gil Ansúrez, a trapper selling fake relics.
