Alejandro Magariños Cervantes (Montevideo, 1825-1897), Uruguay, published in Madrid, in 1848, Caramurú, the first Uruguayan novel of gaucho tone. Spanish critics praised the author as someone who had brought out:

“profit from the infinite natural wonders of America and the interesting customs of its inhabitants”.

  • Caramurú means “long thing” in Guarani and is applied to the eel.
  • The story focuses on the resistance against the Portuguese who, north of the Negro River, carried out montoneros and guerrillas. During the war they took refuge in the “mountains” that grow on the banks of the Uruguay River, at the height of Paysandú.
  • It is an epic novel set in Uruguay, testimony of the American wars of the nineteenth century.
  • The main character of this novel has this nickname and is a son of Indian and Spanish. He lives trapped in his identity conflicts and his epic quest for justice.
  • Behind the fictional characters of the novel, there are the protagonists and the real episodes of the history of Uruguay that burst into the last pages —Rivera, Lavalleja and the 33 Orientales, the battles of Sarandí and Ituzaingó— to give more verisimilitude to the novel.

The story is very agile and manages to turn a romantic love story into a plot full of political adventures. Far from the clichés of romanticism in vogue, Magariños does not idealize the figure of the gaucho and prefers the descriptions of a costumbrista realism of a sociologizing cut.
