A brief review of the history of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies focuses on the period of time in which the emancipation of the ancient kingdoms of Naples and Sicily from all foreign dependence and domination took place and was consolidated.
Ángel de Saavedra (1791-1865) was a writer, playwright and politician. His work is framed within the Spanish romanticism, and in it stand out works such as El sueño del proscrito or Historia del Reino de las dos Sicilias.
Involved in politics from a young age, Saavedra had to go into exile due to his connections with Rafael de Riego’s coup d’état of 1820. After the death of Ferdinand VII he was able to return to Spain where he soon inherited the title of Duke of Rivas. He became mayor of Madrid and president of the Council of State, although for a short period of time.
Subsequently, Queen Isabella II of Bourbon appointed him special envoy and plenipotentiary to the King of the Two Sicilies, Ferdinand II. After his arrival in Naples in early March 1844, he presented his credentials to Ferdinand II. He was ambassador until July 10, 1850.
In 1855 he published Breve reseña de la historia del reino de las Dos Sicilias, this acute reflection on the state of the kingdom.
